Welcome to the portfolio page of Damian Ebanks, games industry veteran since 1998! This site collects some of my thoughts and examples of my work from over the years. There's a bit of everything in here; from ruminations about game and narrative design, to concept art generated over 25 years ago on my very first project in the business. Thanks for checking out my work, I hope you find something here that catches your interest!
Children of Zodiarcs
Children of Zodiarcs is a turn-based JSRPG, (Japanese Strategic Role-Playing Game), published by Square-Enix and developed by Cardboard Utopia.
I wrote the story and helped create the world, characters and lore.
The game brilliantly mixes traditional strategic roll-playing elements with mainstays of table-top gaming like cards and dice. It has a wonderfully original art style and fantastic music.
Every once in a while, an opportunity arises for a creative person to show something real in the entertainment they make. For me, this story about a group of young orphans forced to survive as thieves in a world that despises them was such an opportunity. It wasn't sugar-coated or safe; it was the tragic tale of how society sweeps "undesirables" under the rug all over the world.
In a lot of ways, Children of Zodiarcs was a very personal project for most of us who worked on it. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this project, along with a lot of honest-to-goodness love. I'm proud of the crew that brought so much incredible beauty and passion to this project and proud of the game we made together.
